The Capitol Of The World

I was watching the Travel Channel last night on DVD. An episode of the excellent show called “No Reservations Required” was being shown, presented by the New York celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain. In it he described China as the upcoming capitol of the world.

I think he sees it exactly right.

In China companies are not burdened with pesky little details like enforcement of product safety, workplace safety for their employees, or environmental pollution laws. They don’t have the massive burden of providing health insurance or old age pensions for their employees, and they certainly don’t have to worry about their employees organizing into some kind of a trade union. Governmental corruption is rampant, so if there is a little problem of some kind, it can usually be solved by paying a small “gratuity” to the right government official.

It sounds just like the kind of country that the Republicans in America would like.
