Dakar Rally Cancelled

For the first time in its 30 year existence, the Paris to Dakar rally was cancelled today because of terrorist threats.

This is one of the world’s largest and most famous of all races. Certainly to the off-road community in 4 wheel drive cars and motorcycles, this is like the Formula 1 or the Indianapolis 500.

The men and women who compete in this event are some of the toughest, craziest competitors in the whole world. Many millions of dollars have been spent preparing for this race.

Cancelling this event is unprecedented. It is a very real comment about the state of world affairs. And this has nothing to do with Bozo The Clown, aka George Bush II. But the threats were real and were made by al-Qaida, so in my mind this falls in the category of more troubles caused by lunatic religious fanatics.
