Kentucky Derby

A three year old horse named Mine That Bird which has been stabled at the racetrack here in El Paso, Texas just won the Kentucky Derby. It was an incredibly exciting race. The betting odds were 50 to 1 against this horse winning. This is the second biggest upset in the history of the Kentucky Derby.

Mine That Bird
is out of the Double Eagle Ranch in Roswell, New Mexico, and is the first horse from New Mexico to ever win the Kentucky Derby. In March it raced here at Sunland Park and placed fourth. The trainer is Chip Wooley.

The rider was jockey Calvin Borel, who is from Saint Martinville, Louisiana. In two out of the last three Kentucky Derbys he was the rider. For three years I lived about two and a half miles from St. Martinville, back when I was the plant manager of the world’s largest sweet potato canning plant in nearby Cade, Louisiana.

I just happened to turn on the television as Mine That Bird was starting its amazing run.
