There is a small but dediciated community of people worldwide who are interested in this subject. Being able to make pottery which was impermiable to liquids and odors, and to do so on an industrial scale to sell these pots at reasonable prices was a great advance.

The "bible" on this subject was written by David Gaimster of the British Museum.
