Death and Rebirth

Last spring in a wave of exuberant flowering and pollination the sex act was consummated. Now months later the days are getting shorter and here in the Northern Hemisphere plants are perpetuating the species by making their seeds.

Constantine the Great was head of the Roman Empire around 312 AD. It was during his reign that Christianity was recognized and approved. Prior to this it was heavily discriminated against if not outright
banned.

Yet in the Roman temples, burials, and villas I have been to all over Britain and from Northern Europe down to Southern Italy one sees the image of the pinecone. Many are from well before the time of Constantine and when Christianity was approved as a religion.

The pinecone symbolized death and rebirth, eternal life to our ancestors, the ancients.

I photographed the pinecone at the bottom right today in the wilderness forest just across the street from my house. The two pictures at the top and middle are of roughly 2,000 year old Roman stone pinecones.

The single stone pinecone at the top right is in the amazing archaeology museum in Trier, Germany which at one time was the headquarters of the entire Roman Empire.
