Chaco Metalworker Studio

-

Olaf Hulsmann is a young German artist who works in metal. In 1993 they took at trip to tour the USA. In New Mexico he got to see some rock art and became fascinated by the various legends and gods.

He uses a plasma cutter (see http://www.plasma-cutter.com/ ) to make various images, but his real preference is for the ones depicting rock art. Both from the aboriginal peoples of America and from far northern Europe. I had seen his work and talked with him at the arts and crafts fair in Aachen on Saturday morning.

He does a lot of Kokopellis on pretty much a commercial basis. http://hpgarland.blogspot.com/2006/09/kokopelli.html
-
His real favorites are the original works of art he does not from a template, but freehand as an artist. They are all different. Just trying to recreate the feel one gets when one looks at ancient rock art.
-
I went back Sunday afternoon and bought the beautiful piece of work at the top right. It is supported on a base made from burnt wood. This gives it a really interesting old feel, like the ancient indian gods that are long gone. If you clik on the images they will enlarge.
-
His original art is not particularly cheap. He wanted EUR 80- for this, which is almost $100- US but it is really beautiful and striking. We had a nice conversation. Olaf speaks great English. I mentioned to him that Charlemagne's cathedral, just right over there, was built in 800 A.D. And the oldest known Kokopelli was from around ca. 1,000 A.D.
