Pompeii
Many people have complained over the years about the poor upkeep of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Having visited the sites extensively, I am convinced that the Italian governmen
t has not invested enough money in preservation. I understand that there has been significant mismanagement and looting too.
This morning when the site was opened for visitors it was discovered that the 2,000-year-old "House of the Gladiators" had collapsed and lay in ruins. This is causing fresh debate about whether the Italian government is doing enough to protect these world treasures which sit on the bay of Naples right under the still active Mt. Vesuvius.
