I lived in South Louisiana for several years. It is my experience that in general the residents of Louisiana, both white and black, are a little ignorant and rather poorly educated. Even the wealthy. Certainly political corruption and a lack of respect for the concept of rule-of-law are both problems. Even so, I find that they also are a wonderful, generous group of people.
I see in today’s news that a fifty year old white guy named Dennis Carter Sr. who lived west of New Orleans, Louisiana was going through a bitter divorce. He has killed his wife, son-in-law, and grandson. This guy shot and killed himself while being chased by police not long after the killings.
The 49 year old wife did have a restraining order in place against this guy. As is often the case, the cops certainly did not have the time, resources, or maybe even not the inclination to go to the great deal of effort required to actually protect this lady.
I’ll admit that I haven’t had a great deal of personal experience in this particular area. But it does confirm what I have long suspected: Restraining orders often are far more than worthless. They may actually make the situation more dangerous by inflaming anger and rage in the person being restrained.
It has been my experience that in the vast majority of cases the system of law enforcement does almost nothing to protect the innocent beforehand. Even if they are alerted and warned. And after something terrible like this happens, the jurisprudence system is only able to clean up the blood and perhaps (if they are lucky) put the offender away in jail for a few years. While in jail no attempt at all is made to rehabilitate the offender or train him/her with a new and useful skill which society needs and wants. The new skills that they learn while incarcerated are mostly how to be a more skillful criminal.
One of the lessons to be learned from this is that each person has to be able to protect oneself. So maybe you are able to dial 911 on your cell phone. Big deal. The cops will probably be drinking coffee and eating donuts. By the time they get to your house 5 - 15 minutes minimum will have passed. The bad guy(s) can do a lot of terrible things to you and/or your family in this amount of time.
What a horrible tragedy.
