When I was in my 20’s I had a wonderful girlfriend named Kathy. She was from Buffalo, New York, and she knew a lot about things that I didn’t have much experience in. Rather than admit my ignorance and learn from her, I just ignored this part of our relationship. I was mostly interested in her giant hooters.
Fortunately I remembered many of the things she talked about, and over the years I have corrected much of my ignorance.
She had been to Italy, and she raved about Florence. I have been to Florence on business a few times, but I had never really gotten to know Italy. So a couple of years ago I finally got the chance to spend some time travelling all over Italy and being a tourist. What a wonderful place.
She used to talk about Dirty Harry. In my provincial ignorance I didn’t even know who he was. I sure do now. I’ve now seen all the Dirty Harry movies more than once.
She also used to rave about the Italian film director Federico Fellini. Yesterday my copy of La Dolche Vita came in. Gosh it is good. And in the movie Anita Ekberg is just about the sexiest chick I have ever seen.
Much of my life I enjoyed high performance cars and airplanes and going really fast. Now that I am in my 60’s I find that I actually enjoy driving slowly, stopping to look at the sights, and taking the time to smell the air. My curiosity is much greater now than it was in my 20’s, right after having it beat down for so many years in school and university.
It is good surviving to the final chapter in one’s life. Really good!
