The PBS television station in El Paso, Texas is facing a financial crisis.
One of the lessons we have learned from the current deregulation induced recession America is facing is that in a great many organizations the boards of directors have been completely ineffective. In plenty of cases the top management of the organization was taking the organization in exactly the wrong direction, but the board of directors didn’t have the strength of character to force a change in top management.
My recommendation to the board at KCOS is to seriously consider a change of top management. The face that is presented by the current president and general manager to the public is very negative.
Another suggestion I have to offer is that both the NPR radio station (KTEP) and the PBS TV station in El Paso should open genuine discussions with the public radio and TV stations in nearby Las Cruces, New Mexico regarding collaboration or maybe even a merger of some kind.
Both the radio station and the TV station in El Paso actively solicit money from the public, but neither actively solicits genuine input/feedback, and certainly not any form of control by the public. They want the people’s money, but they want it with no control or strings of any kind attached. This is no longer a realistic way to do business.
