Youngite

----------------------------- (click on the picture and it will enlarge)

Youngite is a name applied to brecciated chalcedony-jasper rocks. It is found in natural caves and veins in Mississippian limestone near Glendo and Guernsey reservoirs in Platte County, Wyoming.

Youngite consists of red, yellow, chocolate, lilac, peach, gold, cream, orange, and purple jasper fragments within a matrix of off-white to grayish-blue chalcedony.

This agate will fluoresce light green when illuminated with a short wave ultra-violet light because of the trace amounts of uranium in the chalcedony.

A friend of mine came by for a visit yesterday. He gave me this wonderful specimen of Youngite. The light blue specs are just pieces of dust (which I should have blown off first with compressed air before photographing it).
