Franklin Mountains

The Franklin mountains in El Paso, Texas are the southernmost part of the Rocky mountains in America. The Franklins run North/South and basically divide the city in half.

A large portion of the Franklins has been set aside as a government protected area called the Franklin Mountains Texas State Park.

Every city likes to claim something that makes it unique. For many years I lived in the charming little Dutch city of Kerkrade. One of their claims to fame was that they hosted the World Music Competition every few years.

El Paso does the same thing. This is the largest “urban” park in the entire United States of America at 24,050 acres (9.733 hectares).

If you get beyond the tourist bureau spin, this really is a very beautiful and wild area. And you can get to it within less than 30 minutes from almost anywhere in town.

I went up there yesterday and took these pictures.
