Kokopelli

-
The humpbacked flute player Kokopelli is an American Indian fertility deity.
-
For years I’ve been interested in him. I’ve seen drawings of him on Indian rock art in the Southwest. And the last time I was in America the family took a nice little trip up to Old Mesilla and ate lunch. At one of the little touristy type shops I bought some kitchen placemats depicting Kokopelli in Santa Fe colors.
-
I went to a fairly big arts and crafts fair in Germany today. There were probably 100 booths where artists were selling various arts and crafts. One caught my eye.
-
This young German guy is a metal worker. And he specializes in making depictions of Kokopelli in rusty steel.
-
He went to America in 1993. In New Mexico he learned about Kokopelli, and since then he has sort of become a German specialist in this native God.
-
And he eeks out a living by making and selling these things.
